Dog bite compensation: some success stories

Our specialist dog bite compensation team have been busy recently making claims on behalf of people who have been subjected to dog attacks. Here are a couple of success stories:

The case of Mr A

Mr A is a self-employed plumber. In August 2018 he attended a customer’s property and was bitten by their dog on the top of his inner thigh.

He contacted Slee Blackwell Solicitors and we agreed to deal with the case on a no win, no fee basis. By mid November the dog owner’s insurers had put forward an offer of £4,000. We felt our client’s injuries deserved more so we made a counter offer of £6,000 plus legal costs.

Mr A wished to draw a line under the incident and was happy to accept the insurance company’s increased offer of £5,500 plus costs. His dog bite compensation was paid to him at the beginning of 2019, so the whole process only took around six months from start to finish.

The case of Mrs H

Mrs H came to us in May 2018 after having been bitten on the face by a neighbour’s dog.

She was initially concerned that she would have to pay legal costs up front and could be left facing a large legal bill. We reassured her that her dog bite compensation claim would be undertaken on a no win-no fee basis. The funding was put in place and by the end of the month the formal ‘letter of claim’ had been sent to the dog owner.

The dog owner said that he did not hold insurance which would cover him for Mrs H’s claim for compensation. This meant he was personally responsible for paying this. It never ceases to amaze us that some dog owners still don’t take out insurance.

Mrs H’s main concern was to cover her loss of earnings resulting from the dog bite, so we put forward an offer to settle the claim out of court at a level both parties found acceptable. Less than 3 months after first contacting Slee Blackwell Mrs H had received her cheque in the post and was very happy with the outcome.
